Letter from the editor: We'll be back on July 10

Welcome to the first of many themed issues as we look forward and identify trends and movements in Toronto and the GTA. This week is all about cultural and national identities. As Pride Week culminates into its series of parades this coming weekend, our development editor Bert Archer looks at a new study designed to secure the Village as a sustainable place for Toronto's LGBT community, and Toronto as a leader in strong LGBT neighbourhood identities on the world stage.

Jaime Woo investigates the rising new breed of Japanese culture in Toronto. With eastern North America's first sake brewery, and with more than 700 Japanese restaurants in the region, Toronto is attracting a younger, hungrier Japanese culture that differs from the Japan-centric hubs of other major cities. He explores food's role in establishing and aligning with national identities.

Lastly, we interview Donny Ouyang, a 21-year-old University of Toronto student and six-figure successful entrepreneur who just returned from representing Canada at the G20 Young Entrepreneurs' Alliance Summit in Moscow, Russia. We chat with him about the summit and what Canada can do to put its youth at the forefront of entrepreneurial growth opportunities.

These themes will continue throughout July as we turn our eyes to the elements, exploring developments and businesses related to earth, water, air and fire. But first, we're taking a short break for Canada Day. We'll be back with a new issue on July 10 exploring the first in our element series: Earth. Find out how a number of regional businesses are adapting innovative approaches to making our city greener and healthier.

We'll also be expanding our Yonge Interviews series. If you know a city-builder, innovative thinker, entrepreneur, neighbourhood-driven councillor or a great community leader, send us an email and nominate them today. This city and its surrounding regions (Durham, York, Mississauga, etc.) are full of creative, driven minds and we want to share their stories.

I hope you have a great summer and enjoy Yonge Street's themed issues.

Sincerely,

Sheena Lyonnais
